“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
