EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
