Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
