Among local residents, Jihad al-Shamie seemed to lead a fairly ordinary life: a man with a newborn who lifted weights and often parked poorly near the house he shared with his family.

As the child of a medical specialist, Shamie was thought to experience a content early years, with siblings who were younger who later pursued promising professions in IT and pharmacology.

Offspring of an Emergency Doctor

His dad, Faraj al-Shamie, travelled the world as a trauma surgeon, operating in war-torn areas across the globe, covering nations like Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He previously worked for NGOs, such as the Red Cross international branch, and trained with the eminent surgeon David Nott in the urban center of Mosul in Iraq.

Faraj al-Shamie has distanced the family from his son’s attack, publishing a message through social media that expressed: “Reports emerging from Manchester regarding the terrorist attack targeting a Jewish synagogue has been a extremely troubling for our household.
